How to Use
- Enter Your business (consigner) details and the Consignee who will receive the goods, with GSTINs if registered and a delivery address if it is different.
- Under Document details, set the challan number and date and choose why the goods are being sent (job work, on approval, not a supply, and so on).
- Add the vehicle number, transporter and e-way bill number if you have them, and tick Show GST only if the goods are moving for a supply.
- List the items with HSN code, quantity and value. Values are shown even when no tax is charged.
- Tap Download PDF or Print. With three copies selected you get separate pages marked Original for consignee, Duplicate for transporter and Triplicate for consigner.
What a delivery challan is
A delivery challan is the document that travels with goods when they are moved without a tax invoice, either because the movement is not a sale or because the invoice can only be issued later. Under GST it is governed by Rule 55 of the CGST Rules, 2017. It records what was sent, to whom and why, and the value of the goods, even when no tax is charged.
When you can use a delivery challan
| Situation | Basis |
|---|---|
| Sending raw material or parts to a job worker (and the job worker returning them) | Rule 55(1)(b), Section 143 |
| Moving goods for reasons other than supply: between your own premises under the same GSTIN, for repair, return of goods, exhibitions | Rule 55(1)(c) |
| Supply of liquid gas where the quantity is not known at removal | Rule 55(1)(a) |
| Goods sent on approval or sale-or-return (for example jewellery shown to a buyer); invoice when accepted | CBEC Circular 10/10/2017-GST, Rule 55(4) |
| A supply sent in batches or lots, or in semi or completely knocked-down (SKD/CKD) condition, against an invoice issued before the first lot | Rule 55(5) |
Moving stock to your branch in another state (a different GSTIN) is a supply between distinct persons and needs a tax invoice, not just a challan.
What it must show
Rule 55 lists: the challan number (up to 16 characters, in its own series) and date; name, address and GSTIN of the consigner and of the consignee if registered; HSN code and description of goods; quantity (provisional if not known exactly); taxable value; tax rate and amount where the goods move for supply to the consignee; place of supply for inter-state movement; and a signature. The tool fills in all of these. Tax is off by default; tick Show GST when the goods are moving for a supply.
Three copies
For goods, the challan is prepared in triplicate:
- Original for consignee, which goes with the goods to the receiver;
- Duplicate for transporter, which the driver carries;
- Triplicate for consigner, which you keep.
The PDF prints each copy on its own pages with the right label and its own page numbers, and leaves room for the receiver's signature.
E-way bill and job work time limits
Goods moving on a challan still need an e-way bill under Rule 138 when the consignment value is above ₹50,000 (some states set their own limit for movement within the state). For goods sent by a principal to a job worker in another state, an e-way bill is needed whatever the value. Enter the e-way bill number on the challan.
(moulds, dies, jigs, fixtures and tools are excluded from the 3-year limit)
If goods are not returned in time, the movement is treated as a supply on the day they were sent and tax becomes payable with interest. Job work movements are also reported in Form ITC-04.
Example
A Rajkot manufacturer sends 200 steel blanks (HSN 7326, value ₹45 each) to a job worker in Ahmedabad for machining. Purpose: job work. Value shown: ₹9,000, no tax. Both are in Gujarat and the value is well below ₹50,000, so an e-way bill is normally not needed (check your state's limit for movement within the state). If the job worker were in Maharashtra, an e-way bill would be needed even for ₹9,000.
The challan is made in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded. Check the rules for your own case with your CA (as of October 2026).
