How to Use
- Choose One barcode or Many (batch) at the top, then pick the Barcode type: Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39 or ITF-14.
- Type the value. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 you can leave out the last digit and the check digit is added for you. If you type it and it's wrong, the tool shows the correct one with a Use button.
- Open Size, text and colours to change the bar width, height, quiet zone, whether the number is printed under the bars, and the colours.
- The barcode updates as you type. Tap PNG or SVG to download it (SVG stays sharp at any print size), or Copy image to paste it straight into a document or label sheet.
- For batch mode, paste one value per line (a column copied from Excel works). Each line shows OK or the problem, and Download all as ZIP (PNG) saves one image per valid value.
Make a barcode for products, labels and stock
This barcode generator draws Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, Code 39 and ITF-14 barcodes in your browser and lets you download them as PNG or SVG. It checks the value as you type, works out the check digit for retail codes, and can make hundreds of barcodes at once from a list.
Which barcode type to choose
| Type | Holds | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| EAN-13 | 13 digits | Retail products sold in India and most countries. Indian codes issued by GS1 India start with 890. |
| EAN-8 | 8 digits | Small packs such as a pen or a sachet with no room for EAN-13 |
| UPC-A | 12 digits | Retail products for the USA and Canada |
| ITF-14 | 14 digits | Outer cartons and shipping cases holding several units |
| Code 128 | Any keyboard text (ASCII) | Invoice numbers, courier labels, asset tags, inventory bins |
| Code 39 | A to Z, 0 to 9, space and - . $ / + % | Older industrial systems, some ID cards and libraries |
For your own labels, such as stock bins, file numbers or invoices, Code 128 is the usual choice. It's compact and takes letters, digits and symbols. Barcodes can't hold โน or Hindi and Gujarati text, so the tool tells you when a value has characters a format doesn't support.
How the check digit works
The last digit of EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 is a check digit. Scanners recompute it, so a misread bar or a typing mistake is caught instead of ringing up the wrong product. All four use the same GS1 method:
2. Multiply the digits alternately by 3 and 1: 3 on the rightmost, then 1, then 3...
3. Add the results.
4. Check digit = the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10 (0 if the sum already is one).
Worked example for EAN-13 with the first 12 digits 890123456780:
Next multiple of 10 is 110, so the check digit is 110 โ 103 = 7
Full code: 8901234567807
Type the 12 digits and the tool adds the 7. Type 13 digits with a different last digit and you'll see "it should be 7", plus a button to fix it. A wrong check digit usually means one of the other digits was copied wrongly, so compare the number with the pack before you accept the fix.
Before you print barcodes for retail
- You can't make up an EAN-13 for a product you sell. Supermarket chains and marketplaces such as Amazon generally expect codes registered to your company through GS1 India, the body that issues 890 numbers. A made-up number may already belong to another product. Use this tool to print codes you've been allotted, or for internal labels.
- Keep black on white. Scanners read the contrast between bars and spaces. Red bars, or a dark background, often fail. The tool warns you when the colours are too close.
- Leave the quiet zone. The blank margin on each side tells the scanner where the code starts. Don't let a border or text touch the bars.
- Size matters. For print, download SVG and scale it in your design software, or use a bar width of 2 to 3 px for PNG. Very small barcodes on a thermal label printer may not scan.
- Test first. Print one sheet and scan it with the actual scanner or a phone app before printing a thousand stickers.
Making many barcodes at once
Switch to Many (batch) and paste a list, one value per line, up to 500 at a time. Each line is checked separately, so one bad value doesn't stop the rest. The zip holds one PNG per valid value, named after the value, ready to place on labels in Word, Excel or your label printer software.
