How to Use
- Choose the QR code type: Link / Text, UPI, Wi-Fi, Phone, SMS, Email or Contact.
- Fill in the details. For UPI, enter your UPI ID (like name@okaxis) and payee name; the amount and note are optional.
- The preview updates as you type. Open Size, colours and error correction to change the image size, colours, error-correction level or margin.
- Scan the preview with your phone camera or UPI app to test it.
- Click PNG for an image to share or SVG for sharp printing at any size.
What is a QR code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a square barcode that phone cameras can read in a split second. It was invented by Denso Wave in Japan in 1994 and is now an international standard (ISO/IEC 18004). In India it is everywhere: the UPI stand at a kirana shop, restaurant menus, Wi-Fi details in offices and the links on product packaging. A QR code simply stores text. What happens when you scan it depends on how that text begins: https:// opens a website, upi://pay opens a UPI app, WIFI: offers to join a network.
What each type stores
| Type | Text inside the code | What the phone does |
|---|---|---|
| Link / Text | https://dailytools.in/ | Opens the link or shows the text |
| UPI | upi://pay?pa=โฆ&pn=โฆ&cu=INR | Opens a UPI app with the payee filled in |
| Wi-Fi | WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeNet;P:โฆ;; | Offers to join the network |
| Phone | tel:+919876543210 | Opens the dialler |
| SMS | SMSTO:+919876543210:Hello | Opens a ready-to-send SMS |
| Contact | vCard 3.0 (BEGIN:VCARDโฆ) | Offers to save the contact |
How a UPI QR code works
A UPI QR code holds a payment link in the format defined by NPCI. The main parameters are pa (payee address, your UPI ID), pn (payee name), am (amount), cu (currency, always INR) and tn (transaction note). Values are percent-encoded so spaces and symbols survive.
upi://pay?pa=ramesh.k@okhdfcbank&pn=Ramesh%20Kumar&am=500.00&cu=INR&tn=Rent%20Oct
When someone scans it, their UPI app shows your name and the amount. They still enter their own UPI PIN, and money moves only after they approve it. Nobody can take money from your account by scanning your QR code. If you leave the amount blank, the payer types it in, which is how most shop QR codes work. Always check the name shown in the app before paying a QR code you didn't make yourself.
Error correction, size and colours
QR codes store extra recovery data so they still scan when partly damaged or dirty. Higher levels make the code denser:
| Level | Recoverable damage | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| L (Low) | about 7% | Long text on screens |
| M (Medium) | about 15% | Most uses (default) |
| Q (Quartile) | about 25% | Printed stickers and posters |
| H (High) | about 30% | Outdoor prints, or a logo placed over the centre |
The standard asks for a blank border (quiet zone) of 4 modules around the code; keep it when printing on a coloured or busy background. Dark modules on a light background scan most reliably. Inverted (light-on-dark) codes and low-contrast colour pairs fail in many apps, so the tool warns you about them. For print, download the SVG: it is vector, so it stays sharp on a large banner. Size the print for the scanning distance: a small table sticker is fine up close, but a poster read from across a room needs a much larger code.
Tips
- Keep it short. A short link makes a simpler code that scans faster, even on budget phones.
- Start links with https://, or some scanners show the address as plain text.
- These codes are static. The content is fixed inside the image and never expires, but it can't be edited later. To change it, make a new code.
- Test before printing. Scan with two different phones and, for UPI, with two different UPI apps.
- Privacy: codes are made in your browser. Your UPI ID, Wi-Fi password and contacts are not uploaded anywhere.
