Three ways to split a PDF

PDF Split breaks one PDF into smaller files. You might need only page 2 of a long form, the last three months of a 40-page bank statement, or a separate file for each certificate in a scanned bundle. The splitting happens in your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

ModeWhat you enterExample with a 10-page PDF
Page rangesThe pages for each file, separated by commas1-3, 4-6, 7 gives three files: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 6, and page 7. Pages 8 to 10 aren't saved.
Every N pagesHow many pages each file should have4 gives pages 1 to 4, 5 to 8, and 9 to 10

Writing page ranges

  • Each comma starts a new file, so 1-3, 7 makes two files.
  • A dash with no end number means "to the last page": 8- is page 8 to the end.
  • Pages you leave out aren't saved anywhere. That's the quickest way to pull out a few pages and drop the rest.
  • A page can go into more than one file, as in 1-3, 3-5.
  • Inside each file the pages keep their original order. To rearrange pages, use Organize PDF Pages.
  • The line under the box shows which files you'll get before you press Split, and warns you if a page number doesn't exist.

File names

Each part is named after the original file plus its pages. Split statement.pdf into 1-3, 4-6 and you get statement-pages-1-3.pdf and statement-pages-4-6.pdf. A single page is named like statement-page-7.pdf. You can change the start of the name before splitting. When there's more than one part, save them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.

Quality and file size

Pages are copied, not redrawn, so text stays selectable and scans look exactly as before. Each part carries its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use, so the parts together can add up to a little more than the original. If one part is still too big for an upload form, use Compress PDF on that part.

Tips

  • Asked for the last six months of bank statements for a loan or visa? Split out just those months instead of uploading the whole year.
  • Scanned a pile of two-sided certificates into one PDF? Every N pages set to 2 gives one file per certificate, front and back together.
  • Rename the parts after downloading (for example 10th-marksheet.pdf) so the person checking them can tell which is which.
  • Password-protected PDFs can't be split. Print an unprotected copy first (in Chrome: Print, then Save as PDF) and split that.
