استعمال کا طریقہ
- Choose or drop a PDF.
- Pick a number style (for example Page 1 of 10) and where it goes on the page.
- Set the first number and the text size. Tick Leave the first page without a number if page 1 is a cover.
- Press Add page numbers, check the preview, then press Download PDF.
Add page numbers to a PDF
This tool adds page numbers to the pages of a PDF. College project reports, theses and internship reports usually have to be numbered, and so do many documents for a court, a tender or a government office, where someone will refer to "page 14". If you built the file by merging scans, or exported it without numbers, you can number it here in a minute. The PDF is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Number styles and positions
| Style | Page 3 of a 12-page PDF shows |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
| Page 1 | Page 3 |
| Page 1 of 10 | Page 3 of 12 |
| 1 of 10 | 3 of 12 |
| 1 / 10 | 3 / 12 |
| - 1 - | - 3 - |
The number can go at the bottom or the top of the page, on the left, in the centre or on the right. It's printed in dark grey in a plain font, about 8.5 mm (24 points) in from the edge. The text size can be anything from 6 to 36 points; it starts at 11, which suits most A4 documents. Pages saved sideways get their number in the right place as you see the page.
Cover pages and starting numbers
Tick "Leave the first page without a number" when page 1 is a cover. The cover is skipped and counting starts on page 2. The "of" total counts only the numbered pages, so in a 12-page report with a cover, the second page reads "Page 1 of 11".
First number lets you carry on from another file. If the first 20 pages of a project report are in a separate PDF, set the first number to 21 for the second part. The total shows the last number printed, so a 10-page second part reads "21 of 30" through to "30 of 30".
Tips
- If your pages already have a footer, put the number at the top so the two don't overlap. Check the preview before you download.
- Merge first, then add numbers. Numbering separate files and merging them later leaves you with several page 1s.
- Numbers go on every page (apart from the cover, if you tick that box). There's no option to skip pages in the middle or use roman numerals for the preface. To leave the front pages unnumbered, split them off with PDF Split, number the main part, then merge the two files back with PDF Merge.
- The numbers are added as real text and the rest of the PDF isn't touched. The download is a new file ending in
-numbered.pdf. - Password-protected PDFs can't be numbered here. Print an unprotected copy first (in Chrome: Print, then Save as PDF).
