Why use a paint calculator?
Buy too little paint and you're making a second trip to the shop halfway through the job, and the new tins may come from a different batch that doesn't quite match. Buy too much and you've wasted money on tins that sit in the loft and are hard to get rid of properly. A paint calculator tells you how many litres you need, plus a little extra for touch-ups.
Working out the paintable area
Wall Area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
Subtract: Doors (≈ 20 sq ft / 1.86 sq m each), Windows (≈ 15 sq ft / 1.39 sq m each)
+ Ceiling (Length × Width) if painting ceiling (add this yourself; the calculator does walls only)
Net Area = Wall Area − Doors − Windows [+ Ceiling]
Subtract: Doors (≈ 20 sq ft / 1.86 sq m each), Windows (≈ 15 sq ft / 1.39 sq m each)

Typical paint coverage in India
| Paint Type | Coverage per Litre |
|---|---|
| Interior emulsion (economy) | 9 – 10 sq m |
| Interior emulsion (premium) | 11 – 13 sq m |
| Exterior weather coat | 8 – 10 sq m |
| Primer / wall putty | 6 – 8 sq m |
| Enamel / oil-based | 12 – 14 sq m |
Buying tips
- Buy 10–15% extra for touch-ups and paint lost in corners and on the roller.
- Check the batch numbers when you buy several tins. Different batches can differ slightly in colour.
- Store leftover paint with the lid shut tight and the tin upside down. It can last 2–3 years like this.
- Ask for a test pot (100–200 ml) before you settle on a shade. Colours look different on a wall than on a shade card.

Close enough to buy by. It uses standard spreading rates (usually 10–12 sq m per litre for emulsion paints). Real use depends on how rough the wall is (rough walls soak up more), the number of coats, the brand and grade of paint, and how it's applied. Buy 10–15% extra for touch-ups and wastage.
Usually two. New or bare walls need 1 coat of primer and at least 2 finish coats. Repainting a light colour over a light one takes 1–2 coats; going dark over light, or light over dark, takes 2–3. The calculator starts at 2 coats, and you can change it in the Coats box.
Multiply the length and height of each wall, add them up, then subtract the doors (about 20 sq ft or 1.86 sq m each) and windows (about 15 sq ft or 1.39 sq m each). Add the ceiling area separately if you're painting it. The calculator does the wall part for you: enter the room size and the number of doors and windows, and it gives the net paintable area.
Roughly 9–12 sq m per litre per coat. Asian Paints Tractor Emulsion covers about 10–11 sq m/litre, Berger Easy Clean about 11–12 sq m/litre and Dulux Weathershield (exterior) about 9–10 sq m/litre. Premium paints usually cover more than economy grades. The tin's data sheet gives the exact spreading rate.
Most interior emulsions weigh about 1.3–1.5 kg per litre, so a 4-litre tin is usually 5–6 kg. Paint is sold by volume (litres), not weight, so work in litres. The calculator gives its answer in litres.
