What is NPS?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, long-term retirement savings scheme regulated by PFRDA (Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority). Your contributions are invested in market-linked funds. At retirement, part of the corpus must buy an annuity (a pension): under PFRDA's December 2025 exit rules, at least 40% for government employees and at least 20% for other subscribers. The rest can be taken as a lump sum. This NPS calculator estimates your corpus and monthly pension.

NPS tax benefits

SectionBenefitLimit
80CCD(1)Employee/self contribution (within 80C limit)10% of salary or ₹1.5L
80CCD(1B)Additional self contribution (over and above 80C, old regime only)₹50,000 extra
80CCD(2)Employer's contributionUp to 14% of salary in the new regime, 10% in the old (within the ₹7.5 lakh yearly cap on employer retirement contributions)

Section numbers are from the Income-tax Act, 1961. The Income-tax Act, 2025, which applies from 1 April 2026, renumbers them.

What you get at retirement

  • Lump sum withdrawal: up to 60% of the corpus for government employees and up to 80% for other subscribers (all of it if the corpus is ₹8 lakh or less). Only 60% of the corpus is tax-free; the tax law hasn't been changed to cover the extra 20%.
  • Annuity purchase: at least 40% (government employees) or 20% (others) must buy an annuity from an IRDAI-registered insurer. The annuity income is taxed at your slab rate.
  • Monthly pension: depends on the annuity amount and the annuity rate on offer when you retire.

Yes, for most people it's one of the better retirement options in India. You get market-linked returns, a pension, and good tax breaks. In the old tax regime there's an extra ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B) on top of the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit, which saves ₹15,000 or more if you're in the 30% bracket. Up to 60% of the corpus comes out tax-free at retirement, and fund management charges are among the lowest in India (0.01–0.09% a year). The downsides: at least 20% (40% for government employees) must go into an annuity, which is taxed as income, and the money is mostly locked until 60.

It depends on the mix you choose. Equity (E) funds have given 10–13% CAGR over 10 years, government bonds (G) 7–9% and corporate bonds (C) 8–10%. Alternative assets (A) vary. The auto-choice lifecycle fund cuts equity as you get older. Many advisers suggest 75% in equity if you're under 45, for growth.

Yes, partly, after 3 years and only for set reasons: your children's higher education or marriage, buying or building a house, treatment of a critical illness, or starting a business. Each time you can take out at most 25% of your own contributions (not your employer's). Under the December 2025 rules you get up to four such withdrawals before 60, at least four years apart. If you exit before 60 with a corpus of ₹5 lakh or less, you can withdraw all of it. Above ₹5 lakh, at least 80% must go into an annuity.

Nothing changes; NPS moves with you. Your PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) stays the same whoever your employer is, and your new employer can pay into the same PRAN. If the new employer doesn't offer NPS, you can carry on as an individual subscriber. That makes NPS much easier than EPF for people who switch jobs.
