Which pack is really cheaper?
A 500 g packet for ₹95, a 1 kg packet for ₹180 or the 2.5 kg family pack for ₹420? Supermarkets, kirana stores and grocery apps sell the same product in many sizes, and the bigger pack isn't always the better deal. The only fair way to compare is the unit price: the price per kg, per litre or per piece. This unit price calculator works it out for up to four packs, converts grams to kilograms and millilitres to litres, and highlights the cheapest.
How it works
Price per litre = price ÷ quantity in litres (200 ml = 0.2 L)
% more = (unit price ÷ cheapest unit price − 1) × 100
It also shows the price per 100 g or 100 ml, which is easier to compare for small items like spices. And it shows the extra you pay for each pack, compared with buying the same quantity at the cheapest pack's rate.
Worked example: atta, rice or dal
| Pack | Price | Per kg | Per 100 g | vs cheapest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: 500 g | ₹95 | ₹190 | ₹19.00 | +13.1% |
| B: 1 kg | ₹180 | ₹180 | ₹18.00 | +7.1% |
| C: 2.5 kg | ₹420 | ₹168 | ₹16.80 | cheapest |
Pack C works out cheapest at ₹168 per kg. Buying 500 g at pack C's rate would cost ₹84, so pack A costs you ₹11 extra. Pack B costs ₹12 extra for its 1 kg. If you buy this every month, that adds up over a year.
When the bigger pack isn't the better deal
- Offers on small packs. A discount or "buy 2 get 1" on the small size can make it cheaper per kg than the large pack. Enter the offer price to check.
- Spoilage and expiry. Oil, flour, milk products and spices lose quality. A cheaper large pack is no saving if you end up throwing half of it away.
- Storage and cash. Bulk packs need space and tie up money upfront.
- Different products. Compare the same brand and grade, or decide whether a cheaper brand is good enough for you.
Unit prices on the shelf label
Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, packaged goods must show the net quantity and the MRP, and since 1 January 2024 also a unit sale price: per gram or per ml for packs under 1 kg or 1 litre, and per kg or per litre for larger packs. Small and large packs use different units on the label (₹0.19 per g against ₹168 per kg), so they're hard to compare at a glance. This calculator puts every pack on the same per-kg or per-litre basis, and it works with offer prices too.
Tips
- Use the net quantity, not the gross weight or "approx. servings".
- For things sold by the piece (eggs, tissues, nappies, batteries), choose "pieces" and enter the count.
- Liquids sold by weight (some ghee and oils are labelled in g or kg) can only be compared with packs also labelled by weight.
