Why use a password generator?
People are bad at making up random passwords. We reuse them, pick dictionary words, tack on a birth year, or type keyboard patterns like "qwerty123". That leaves accounts open to dictionary attacks, credential stuffing and brute-force attacks. A password generator picks the characters at random for you, so there's no pattern to guess.
Some numbers on password strength
- A 6-character password in lowercase letters can be cracked in under 1 second.
- A 12-character password mixing upper and lower case, numbers and symbols would take centuries on current hardware.
- Stolen, guessed and reused passwords are among the most common ways attackers get into accounts.
- The most common password in India is still "123456".
How the passwords are generated
The tool uses crypto.getRandomValues(), part of the Web Cryptography API that's built into every modern browser. It's a cryptographically secure random number generator (CSPRNG) seeded by your operating system, so unlike Math.random() its output can't be predicted. The password is made inside your browser and is never sent to any server.
Good habits
- Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePass) to keep a different password for every site.
- Don't reuse passwords. Then if one site is breached, only that one account is at risk.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever you can, as a second lock.
- Use at least 16 characters for important accounts like your bank, email and social media.
