How the fuel cost is calculated

This fuel cost calculator works out how much petrol, diesel or CNG a trip will use and what it will cost you, and splits the bill if friends are coming along.

Fuel Required = Distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km/litre)
Fuel Cost = Fuel Required × Price per Litre

Take Mumbai to Pune, 150 km, in a car that does 15 km/l, with petrol at ₹111 a litre (Mumbai's price in October 2026). You need 10 litres, so the trip costs ₹1,110 one way (₹2,220 there and back). Split four ways, the return trip is ₹555 each.

Typical mileage of Indian vehicles

Vehicle TypeCity MileageHighway Mileage
Small petrol hatchback12–15 km/l18–22 km/l
Sedan (petrol)10–14 km/l16–20 km/l
Diesel SUV12–16 km/l17–22 km/l
CNG car20–28 km/kg28–35 km/kg
Two-wheeler (petrol)35–55 km/l50–65 km/l

What brings your mileage down

  • AC in city traffic can cut mileage by 10–20%.
  • Under-inflated tyres: 10 PSI low costs you 3–5% in mileage.
  • Aggressive driving, with quick starts and hard braking, cuts mileage by 15–30%.
  • Engine condition: a clogged air filter or dirty fuel injectors waste fuel.
  • Load: every extra 50 kg lowers mileage by about 1–2%.

Petrol vs diesel vs CNG: cost per km

Petrol at ₹100 a litre in a car doing 15 km/l costs ₹6.67/km. Diesel at ₹90 a litre and 18 km/l costs ₹5/km. CNG at ₹80/kg and 25 km/kg costs ₹3.2/km. CNG is the cheapest to run, but the range is shorter and you'll find stations mainly in bigger cities.

नेहमी विचारले जाणारे प्रश्न

It divides the distance by your mileage to get the fuel needed, then multiplies that by the price per litre (or per kg for CNG). Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's mileage and today's fuel price. For a round trip, enter the distance both ways. Add the number of passengers to see each person's share.

In the city, 12–16 km/l for a small petrol hatchback, 10–14 km/l for a sedan and 15–20 km/l for a diesel car. Highway mileage is usually 20–30% better. SUVs give 10–18 km/l depending on engine size. CNG vehicles give 25–35 km/kg. Electric cars cost about ₹1–1.5 per km if you charge at home.

It depends on the city, because state VAT and local taxes differ. In October 2026, petrol cost about ₹102 a litre in Delhi and ₹107–116 in Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and diesel about ₹95–104 a litre. Prices move with global crude oil rates, so check your local petrol pump or your state's petroleum department website, and type today's price into the calculator.

Start with tyre pressure: under-inflated tyres can cut mileage by 3–5%. Get the engine serviced on time, especially the air filter and spark plugs. Drive smoothly without sudden acceleration or hard braking. Use cruise control on highways, go easy on the AC in city traffic, and take out weight you don't need. On the highway, 60–80 km/h gives the best mileage.

Yes, usually. CNG costs roughly ₹75–90/kg in major cities and gives 25–35 km/kg, which works out to ₹2.5–3.5 per km. Petrol at ₹100 a litre and 15 km/l comes to about ₹6.5 per km. If you drive a lot, the savings add up fast. The catch is a shorter range, and CNG stations are mostly in bigger cities.
