Converting IST to world time

India runs on one time zone, Indian Standard Time (IST), UTC+5:30. It is based on the 82.5ยฐ E meridian near Mirzapur, and India does not use daylight saving time, so IST never changes. Many other countries do move their clocks for summer. That is why the gap between India and London or New York changes twice a year. This converter uses your browser's built-in time zone database, so it applies those changes correctly for any date. Nothing is sent over the internet.

How it works

UTC time = local time โˆ’ that zone's offset on that date
city time = UTC time + the city's offset on that date

Example: a call at 7:30 pm IST on Monday, 12 October 2026. In UTC that is 2:00 pm (19:30 โˆ’ 5:30). London is on summer time (UTC+1) until 25 October, so it is 3:00 pm there. New York is on UTCโˆ’4, so it is 10:00 am. San Francisco is on UTCโˆ’7, so it is 7:00 am. Sydney has already started summer time (UTC+11), so it is 1:00 am on Tuesday.

In 2026, clocks change on 8 March and 1 November in the USA and Canada, on 29 March and 25 October in the UK and the EU, and on 5 April and 4 October in Sydney. For a few weeks each spring and autumn, Europe and North America change on different dates. During those weeks the Londonโ€“New York gap is 4 hours instead of 5, and the converter accounts for it.

Skipped and repeated times

When clocks go forward, one hour does not exist. In New York, 2:30 am on 8 March 2026 never happens. If you enter such a time, the tool tells you and uses the moment one hour later. When clocks go back, one hour happens twice. In London, 1:30 am on 25 October 2026 happens first in summer time and again in winter time, and the tool uses the first one. IST has neither problem.

Tips for scheduling across zones

  • Each row is marked "office hours" (9 amโ€“6 pm on a weekday) or "night" (10 pmโ€“6 am) to help you pick a fair slot.
  • For the US, India's late evening (around 7:30โ€“9:30 pm IST) overlaps the East Coast morning.
  • Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata all share IST. When adding a city, use the zone's main city name, for example "Kolkata", "Kathmandu" or "Chicago".

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the US time zone and the season. New York is 10 h 30 min behind IST in winter and 9 h 30 min behind during US daylight saving time (mid-March to early November). California is 13 h 30 min behind in winter and 12 h 30 min behind in summer.

No. India uses Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30) all year. The difference with countries that do change their clocks, such as the UK, USA and Australia, shifts by an hour when they change.

IST is UTC+5:30, or GMT+5:30. To get UTC from IST, subtract 5 hours 30 minutes. For example, 9:00 am IST is 3:30 am UTC.

From late October to late March, London is on GMT, so 9:00 am IST is 3:30 am in London. During British Summer Time (late March to late October) it is 4:30 am.

On the night clocks go forward for daylight saving, an hour is skipped. In New York, 2:00 to 2:59 am on 8 March 2026 never happens. The tool then uses the time one hour later.

No. It uses the time zone rules built into your browser, so it works offline once the page has loaded, and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
