How to calculate your vehicle's real mileage

The mileage printed in a car or bike brochure is measured in a laboratory test cycle. On Indian roads, with traffic, the AC on, passengers and your own driving style, you usually get less. The most reliable way to measure your vehicle's mileage is the full-tank method, and this mileage calculator does the arithmetic for you.

The full-tank method

  1. Fill the tank to the brim (stop at the first automatic cut-off) and note the odometer reading, or reset the trip meter to zero.
  2. Drive as you normally do until at least half the tank is used.
  3. Fill the tank full again, ideally at the same pump and the same nozzle cut-off, and note the litres it takes and the new odometer reading.

The litres you put in the second time are exactly the fuel you burned over that distance.

Mileage (km/l) = km driven ÷ litres filled at the second fill-up
Fuel use (l/100 km) = 100 ÷ mileage
Cost per km = fuel price per litre ÷ mileage

Worked example

Your odometer read 12,000 km at the first full tank and 12,450 km at the next. You filled 30 litres. Mileage = 450 ÷ 30 = 15 km/l, which is 100 ÷ 15 = 6.67 litres per 100 km. With petrol at ₹100 a litre, every km costs ₹100 ÷ 15 = ₹6.67, so 1,000 km costs about ₹6,667. If the brochure claimed 20 km/l, you're getting 75% of the claimed figure, which is common in city driving.

km/l and l/100 km

km/ll/100 kmCost per km at ₹100/litre
1010.0₹10.00
156.67₹6.67
205.00₹5.00
402.50₹2.50
601.67₹1.67

Indian brochures quote km/l. Many international reviews use l/100 km, where a lower number is better. The ₹100 price is just an example, so enter what you actually paid.

Getting a reliable figure

  • Repeat over two or three full tanks and take the average. A single reading can be off because the "full" level varies slightly.
  • Measure city and highway driving separately if you do both; highway mileage is usually higher.
  • Keep the tyre pressure right, service the vehicle on time, accelerate gently and don't idle for long. Each of these helps mileage.
  • A sudden drop in mileage can point to low tyre pressure, a clogged air filter or a dragging brake. Get it checked.

Planning a trip

Enter a trip distance and the calculator estimates the fuel and cost at your measured mileage. For a fuller trip plan with a split between passengers, use the fuel cost calculator. Thinking of switching to electric? Compare running costs with the EV charging cost calculator.

Use the full-tank method. Fill the tank full and note the odometer reading. Drive normally, then fill it full again and note the litres and the new reading. Mileage = km driven ÷ litres filled the second time. For example, 450 km on 30 litres is 15 km/l.

Because the claimed figure comes from a standard laboratory test cycle. Real traffic, idling, the AC, load, tyre pressure and driving style usually pull it down, especially in the city.

Divide 100 by the km/l figure. 15 km/l is 100 ÷ 15 = 6.67 litres per 100 km; 20 km/l is 5 litres per 100 km.

Divide the fuel price per litre by the mileage. At ₹100 a litre and 15 km/l, each km costs ₹100 ÷ 15 = ₹6.67.

Less so. The amount left in the tank when the light comes on varies. The full-tank to full-tank method is more reliable, and averaging two or three fill-ups is better still.
