What is PPF?

The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a long-term savings scheme backed by the Government of India, and one of the safest and most tax-efficient places to keep money in the country. It falls under the EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax category. Your deposits qualify for the 80C deduction, the interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount isn't taxed either. This PPF calculator shows what your deposits will grow to.

How PPF interest is worked out

Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. So to get the most out of it, deposit before 5 April each financial year. That way your whole deposit earns interest for the full year.

PPF compared with other options

  • It beats an FD after tax, because FD interest is taxed and PPF interest isn't.
  • It's safer than equity, but you can't get at the money as easily because of the 15-year lock-in.
  • It works well as the debt part of a balanced portfolio, alongside equity SIPs.

اکثر پوچھے جانے والے سوالات

7.1% a year for October–December 2026. The government reviews and announces the PPF rate every quarter. It has been 7.1% since April 2020; between 2012 and 2017 it ranged from 8.0% to 8.8%.

Partly, yes. Premature closure is allowed only in special cases, such as serious illness in the family or a minor child's higher education, and only after 5 complete financial years. Even then you lose 1% of the interest. Partial withdrawal is allowed from the 7th financial year, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th year before the year you apply.

No. The yearly limit is ₹1.5 lakh per account. Anything above that earns no interest and doesn't qualify for the 80C deduction. A PPF account a parent opens for a minor child counts towards the parent's ₹1.5 lakh limit.

Before 5 April, at the start of the financial year. PPF interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. If you deposit between 1 and 4 April, the full year's deposit earns 12 months of interest. Deposit after 5 April and you lose a month's interest on that money.

Not in a new account. NRIs can't open a PPF account. But if you become an NRI during the 15-year term, you can keep your existing account going until maturity at the rate in force. You can't extend it after maturity while you're an NRI.

No. You have three choices. You can close it and take the full maturity amount. You can extend it in 5-year blocks without new deposits, and the balance keeps earning interest. Or you can extend it with fresh deposits, and the 80C and EEE benefits carry on. You have to apply for an extension within one year of maturity.
