Why there's more than one CGPA formula

India has no single national rule for converting CGPA to percentage. The common ×9.5 rule comes from CBSE's old Class 10 CGPA system, and many universities on the UGC's CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) use it too. UGC doesn't fix one conversion, though, so universities apply their own, and some worked out formulas from past results. This CGPA to percentage converter covers the common ones. For applications and certificates, always use the formula your own university publishes.

The common conversion formulas

FormulaCommonly used byExample (CGPA 8.0)
CGPA × 9.5CBSE's rule, and many universities on CBCS76%
CGPA × 10Direct conversion, e.g. Anna University and newer VTU schemes80%
(CGPA − 0.5) × 10e.g. GTU (Gujarat)75%
(CGPA − 0.75) × 10e.g. VTU (2015 to 2018 schemes), AKTU, Mumbai University72.5%
7.25 × CGPA + 11Mumbai University engineering (older circular)69%

The same 8.0 CGPA comes out anywhere between 69% and 80% depending on the formula, which is why it matters which one you quote. Universities change their rules between schemes and batches, so the list above is a guide, not an official record. The formula that counts is the one on your own mark sheet or in your university's ordinance.

Going the other way: the CGPA you need

Job notices often ask for 60% in graduation. Switch the converter to % to CGPA to see what that means for you: 60% needs a CGPA of 6.32 with the ×9.5 rule, 6.5 with (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 and 6.75 with (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

For job applications

Many companies ask for a percentage. If your mark sheet only shows CGPA, convert it with your university's official formula. Some companies take CGPA as it is. When you're not sure, give both and attach the conversion certificate from your university.

Your university's official formula, the one printed on your mark sheet or published on its website. If none is given and you're asked for a percentage, CBCS (×9.5) is widely accepted for central universities. From a private university, add a note saying which formula you used so there's no confusion.

No. A CGPA of 8.0 isn't 80%. The conversion depends on your university's formula: with the ×9.5 rule, 8.0 CGPA = 76%, while the direct ×10 rule gives 80%. Don't assume the two are the same. Use the proper conversion.

Yes, roughly. First convert your CGPA to a percentage with your university's formula, then use this mapping: 75%+ ≈ 3.7–4.0, 60–74% ≈ 3.0–3.6, 50–59% ≈ 2.5–2.9, 40–49% ≈ 2.0–2.4. For official applications, especially to US universities, give both CGPA and percentage and let the institution convert. Many US universities accept WES evaluations.

Usually 60% or more, the 'first division' that most central government jobs ask for in a bachelor's degree. That's about 6.32 CGPA with the ×9.5 rule. Some posts ask for 55% (about 5.8 CGPA). PSUs that recruit through GATE set their own CGPA cut-offs, usually 6.5–7.5 on a 10-point scale. Check the job notification for the exact rule.
