Ex-showroom vs on-road price

The price in a car or bike advertisement is usually the ex-showroom price: the vehicle itself, including GST. Before you can drive it on the road you also pay road tax and registration charges to the state, buy insurance, and for a car, a FASTag. The total is the on-road price, and it's often 10–20% more than the ex-showroom price. This on-road price calculator builds an itemised estimate from the figures you enter, so you can check a dealer's quote line by line.

How the estimate is built

On-road price = ex-showroom + road tax (% × ex-showroom) + registration & RTO charges
+ insurance + FASTag + accessories / extended warranty + handling (if any)
+ TCS (1% of the price, only if the price is above ₹10 lakh)

Worked example

Item₹8 lakh car₹12 lakh car
Ex-showroom price₹8,00,000₹12,00,000
Road tax (example: 10% / 12%)₹80,000₹1,44,000
Registration & RTO charges (example)₹2,500₹2,500
Insurance (example quote)₹35,000₹35,000
FASTag₹500₹500
TCS at 1%Not applicable₹12,000
On-road price₹9,18,000₹13,94,000

The road tax rates above are only examples to show the arithmetic, not any particular state's rate.

Road tax: why there's no state preset

Motor vehicle tax is set by each state, usually as a one-time "lifetime" tax for private vehicles, and it depends on the price band, fuel type, engine size, whether the owner is an individual or a company, and sometimes a separate cess. States revise these rates in their budgets, and many waive or cut road tax for electric vehicles under their EV policies. A built-in figure could easily be out of date, so the calculator asks you for the rate. Find it on your state transport department's website, on parivahan.gov.in, or in the dealer's itemised RTO breakup.

TCS on vehicles above ₹10 lakh

When a motor vehicle's sale price is more than ₹10 lakh, the dealer must collect tax collected at source (TCS) of 1% of the full price and deposit it against your PAN. This was section 206C(1F) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and continues under section 394 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026, with the same 1% rate for motor vehicles (checked October 2026). TCS isn't an extra cost. It shows up in your Form 26AS/AIS, and you claim it against your income tax in your return or get it refunded. That's why the calculator also shows the "real cost after TCS credit".

Charges to question

  • Handling or logistics charges are not a government tax or RTO fee. Transport departments in several states, including Delhi, Kerala and Assam, have acted against dealers who collect them. Ask for it to be removed, or at least itemised.
  • Insurance from the dealer is convenient, but you don't have to buy it there. New cars need 3-year and new two-wheelers 5-year third-party cover. Compare the own-damage premium with other insurers.
  • Accessories and extended warranty are optional. Decide on them separately from the vehicle price.
  • Registration charges should match the RTO receipt. They include the registration certificate fee, smart card, high-security number plate and, on a loan, the hypothecation fee. Battery-operated vehicles are exempt from the central registration certificate fee (Central Motor Vehicles Rules, amended 2021).

Everything here is an estimate from your inputs. Confirm the final figures with the dealer's itemised quote and your RTO before you pay.

नेहमी विचारले जाणारे प्रश्न

It's the ex-showroom price plus road tax, registration and other RTO charges, insurance, FASTag, any accessories or extended warranty you choose, and TCS of 1% if the price is above ₹10 lakh.

No. The 1% TCS collected on vehicles priced above ₹10 lakh is deposited against your PAN. It appears in Form 26AS/AIS, and you claim it against your income tax (or as a refund) when you file your return.

They're questionable at best. Handling or logistics charges aren't a government tax or RTO fee. Transport departments in several states have told dealers not to collect them and have acted against dealers who did. Ask the dealer to remove the charge or explain it in writing.

There's no single figure. It depends on your state, the vehicle's price, fuel type and owner type, and rates change from time to time. Many states charge a one-time tax for private vehicles and offer concessions for electric vehicles. Check your state transport department's website or the dealer's RTO breakup and enter that rate.

No. You can buy the policy from any insurer as long as it meets the legal requirement, which for a new car includes 3-year third-party cover (5 years for a new two-wheeler). Comparing quotes can save money on the own-damage part.
