You can open an Atal Pension Yojana (APY) account and start investing whether or not you already have a bank account. The steps for both cases are below. Many banks also let you join through net banking or their mobile app.
If you have a bank account
- Go to the bank branch or post office where you have your savings account.
- Fill in the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) registration form.
- Give your savings account number, Aadhaar number and mobile number.
- The first contribution is debited from your account straight away, and after that every month, quarter or half-year, as you chose.
- The bank gives you an acknowledgement number or PRAN on the counterfoil of your application.
If you don't have a bank account
- Go to your nearest bank branch or post office.
- Open a savings account, using Aadhaar as your KYC document.
Please note: Aadhaar isn't mandatory for opening an Atal Pension Yojana (APY) account, but giving it is a good idea because it identifies you and helps you get updates. Since 1 October 2022, people who are or have been income-tax payers can't join.
