How many tiles do you need?

To work out how many tiles you need, find the area you want to cover, divide it by the area of one tile and add some extra for cuts and breakage. Shops sell tiles in whole boxes, so you then round up to full boxes. This tile calculator does each step and shows the working, for floors and for bathroom or kitchen walls.

The formula

Floor area = length × breadth
Wall area = 2 × (length + breadth) × height − doors − windows
Tiles = area ÷ area of one tile × (1 + wastage %), rounded up
Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up

For walls, each door counts as 3 × 7 ft (0.9 × 2.1 m) and each window as 4 × 3 ft (1.2 × 0.9 m). If yours are very different, change the number of doors or windows so the area comes out about right.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft bedroom floor with 600 × 600 mm vitrified tiles, 4 tiles per box, 10% wastage, at ₹55 per sq ft:

  • Floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft (11.15 m²)
  • One tile: 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m² (3.875 sq ft)
  • Exact tiles: 11.15 ÷ 0.36 = 30.97
  • With 10% wastage: 34.06, so 35 tiles
  • Boxes: 35 ÷ 4 = 8.75, so 9 boxes (36 tiles)
  • Cost: 36 tiles × 3.875 sq ft = 139.5 sq ft × ₹55 = about ₹7,673

Common tile sizes in India

2 × 4 ft600 × 1200 mm7.75 sq ftLarge rooms, fewer joints
80 × 80 cm800 × 800 mm6.89 sq ftHalls, showrooms

Most "2 × 2 ft" tiles are really 600 × 600 mm, which covers 3.88 sq ft, not 4. Over a large floor that difference adds up, so go by the size printed on the box.

How much wastage to allow

  • 5–10%: straight laying in a simple rectangular room
  • 10–15%: rooms with many corners, pillars or cut-outs, and large-format tiles that are expensive to cut
  • 15% or more: diagonal (45°) or herringbone patterns, where most border tiles are cut

Buying tips

  • Buy all boxes at once, from the same batch. The shade and size code on the box should match, because tiles from different batches can differ slightly.
  • Keep a few spare tiles after the job for future repairs. The same design may be discontinued later.
  • Shops usually quote prices per sq ft but sell whole boxes. Your bill is the box coverage × the rate, not your room area × the rate.
  • Budget separately for tile adhesive or cement mortar, grout, spacers, skirting and labour (often charged per sq ft).
  • For skirting, multiply the room perimeter by the skirting height and add it to the area, or buy ready-made skirting pieces.

વારંવાર પુછાતા પ્રશ્નો

29 tiles, or 8 boxes. A "2 × 2" tile is usually 600 × 600 mm, which covers 3.88 sq ft. 100 ÷ 3.88 = 25.8 tiles, and adding 10% wastage gives 28.4, so buy 29 tiles. At 4 tiles per box, that's 8 boxes (32 tiles).

About 10% extra for straight laying in a normal room and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns, rooms with many corners, or large tiles that are hard to cut. Keep a few spares after the job for future repairs.

Wall area = 2 × (length + breadth) × the height you're tiling to, minus the doors and windows. A 8 × 6 ft bathroom tiled to 7 ft with one 3 × 7 ft door has 2 × 14 × 7 − 21 = 175 sq ft of wall. With 300 × 450 mm wall tiles (1.45 sq ft each) and 10% wastage, that's 133 tiles.

It depends on the brand and tile size. As a rough guide, 600 × 600 mm tiles commonly come 4 to a box (about 15.5 sq ft), 600 × 1200 mm tiles 2 to a box, and 800 × 800 mm tiles 3 to a box. The box label shows the number of pieces and the coverage, so use that.

For the boxes. Shops multiply the coverage of the boxes you buy by the rate per sq ft. Because you buy whole boxes plus wastage, the tile cost per sq ft of your room comes out higher than the quoted rate. The calculator shows both.
